Productivity Tips for Service Industries

One of the challenges of running a service business is the sheer volume of activities vying for your attention on any given day. Business owners must learn to work smarter, not harder, to maintain productivity and avoid burnout. As the owner of a service-based firm, you can benefit from the following time-saving strategies and techniques:

--> Put things in order of importance. Create a daily list of tasks and prioritize them accordingly. Prioritize the things that will have the most significant positive effect on the company. When you have work that other people can do, give it to them.

--> Do related things at once. Assign similar tasks together so you don't have to switch between them repeatedly. It's more efficient, for instance, to return all calls at once rather than spreading them out over the day.

--> Put the time in your calendar. Schedule extended periods of time in which you can devote 100% of your attention to important tasks. Turn off your notifications and avoid scheduling meetings during that time.

--> Take on administrative tasks in 15-minute chunks. To avoid becoming caught in busy work, set aside only 15–30 minutes at a time for tasks like emailing, bookkeeping, etc.

--> Maximize the use of automation. Find ways to save time performing mundane tasks by using premade forms, applications, and schedules. There will now be more time for productive endeavours.

--> Pause and refresh your mind. Our mental faculties require periodic downtime. At regular intervals during the day, get up from your desk and stretch, meditate, or take a short stroll.

--> Put today's plans into action for tomorrow. Take 15 minutes before bed to write up your daily to-do list. Knowing what is ahead will help you get some rest.

--> Figure out when you can get the most done. Figure out when you're at your most productive, and work diligently then. Don't try to tackle difficult chores when you're feeling tired.

--> Put your trust in your staff. You can focus on big-picture strategy if you hire or train people to handle the day-to-day interactions with customers and internal processes.

--> Utilize newfound tools and services that help you get answers quickly or brainstorm solutions, do some of the busy work on your to-do list and more.
